Homeschooling with a toddler underfoot can feel like trying to read aloud during a tiny, ongoing circus.
You’re mid-lesson and suddenly…
- someone needs a snack.
- someone is climbing something.
- someone just unrolled an entire roll of toilet paper.
But this is the "call within a call"! And with a little preparation and a gentle rhythm, you can keep your toddler content while homeschooling your older children.
Why Toddlers May Struggle During Homeschool Time
Toddlers aren’t maliciously interrupting the school day. They have relational and developmental needs that may simply need tending to, even amidst the to-do lists.
Toddlers:
- crave connection
- need movement
- have short(er) attention spans
- love to imitate older siblings
When you work with these needs instead of against them, everything becomes lighter.
1. Create a “Toddler School Time” Basket
This is one of the most effective tools you can use! Set aside a special basket that only comes out during homeschool time.
Fill it with:
- Board books
- Simple puzzles
- Quiet toys
- Coloring supplies
Rotate items regularly to keep things fresh. Browse a few of my favorites here!
2. Encourage Independent Play
Your toddler may need some guidance toward independent play, but in combination with these other ideas, their tolerance for independent play can increase greatly!
Start with 5–10 minutes of play while you remain nearby. Gradually, extend the time. This builds focus and confidence over time.
3. Set Up Simple Activity Stations
Toddlers thrive on movement and variety and can become engrossed in an interesting pastime!
Try setting up a simple activity station that rotates between:
- Sensory bin
- Blocks or building toys
- Play area (like a kitchen or farm)
4. Let Them “Do School” Too
Toddlers want to be like their older siblings. They want to be included in what the family is doing... so let them join!
Give them:
- A notebook
- Crayons
- Stickers
- A small book stack
Tell them, “It’s your school time," and let them have a blast!
5. Use Morning Time to Your Advantage
Morning Time is a hidden gift with littles. My toddlers always participate in our Morning Time.
Toddlers can:
-
Listen to read-alouds
-
Play quietly nearby
-
Sit in on our family catechesis
6. Plan Strategic Snacks
A well-timed snack has saved our homeschool many times!
I like to prepare a snack tray in the morning that includes filling foods that may take some time to eat.
I often include:
- Hard-boiled eggs (and let them peel them)
- Fresh berries
- Chopped veggies and hummus
- Pistachios (and let them crack them)
When I sense the toddler getting antsy while I'm in the middle of a more focused lesson with an older child, I bring out the snack tray and a little bowl for their snack scraps!
7. Use Nap Time Wisely
Of course, naps are a great way to squeeze in more focused schooling with older children.
Use naps for:
- One-on-one time for review
- Reading practice
- More focused lessons like math
8. Embrace a Flexible Homeschool Rhythm
This is one of the great gifts on homeschooling... you get to make it fit your family and your season!
Rather than clinging to rigid schedules, opt for a rhythm and routine that can flex around (but not bow to) the toddler.
Interruptions are normal! It does not mean you're failing.

9. Take School Outside
When the day starts unraveling, go outside!
Fresh air changes everything.
- Read aloud on a blanket
- Let your toddler play nearby
- Bring simple subjects outdoors
It is a game changer!
10. Tend to Your Heart
I find that starting my morning in prayer and peace helps me have a healthy mindset before the homeschool day begins.
I light a candle, spend time with the Lord, read a spiritual classic, and have a mug of something warm.
Toddlers aren't in the Way
Toddlers are a part of the family, and that means they are part of the family schooling. It may feel chaotic at times, but embracing the short season as opposed to fighting it will bring more peace and joy to your days!
And your toddler? They are soaking it all in.
