A Mother's Morning Basket has become an integral part of each day since the early years of my motherhood. While it may seem a luxury to some, I am convinced that—no matter how long it lasts or the variety of its contents—it aids in my mission of service to my family.
The Benefits of a Mother's Morning Basket
When I begin my day with a Mother's Morning Basket, my vision is properly set.
I tend to the cultivation of my:
- Soul - through the daily Mass readings, Scripture readings, and a spiritual classic
- Intellect - by reading a non-fiction book that inspires me in my vocation
- Humanity - by enjoying a book, magazine, or article that delights my heart or is relevant to my hobbies
By allowing the Lord to fill me up before the day "begins," I am able to more patiently and joyfully tend to the duties of my home. The grace of the present moment is always available; taking this time in the morning helps open my heart to notice and receive it.
A Mother's Morning Basket for Lent
Lent is a wonderful time to take up the practice of a Mother's Morning Basket as we are called to more fervent periods of prayer.
Here are some ideas to include in your Mother's Morning Basket this Lent!
- Scripture - Read through the prophecies of Isaiah or the Gospel of Matthew.
- Spiritual Reading - Grab a favorite Lenten devotional, or check out Fulton Sheen's Characters of the Passion or The Sacred Passion by Luis de la Palma.
- Poetry - Consider the works of Christina Rossetti or Saint Thérèse of Lisieux.
- Non-fiction - To fill your cup with beauty AND direct your heart during Lent, grab the works from this Holy Week Picture Study (it's not just for your kids!). Sit with the paintings and allow the Holy Spirit to move your heart through them.
I would love to hear what is in YOUR Mother's Morning Basket for the Lenten season, or what you have found beneficial in the past. Let me know in the comments!
