How We Use Yoto in Our Homeschool

How We Use Yoto in Our Homeschool

One of the most-loved and most-used tools in our homeschool is the Yoto Player — a screen-free audio player designed just for kids. About four years ago, we got our oldest son a Yoto so he could listen to more audiobooks without borrowing my phone for audiobooks from the library.

He loved it.

As a family who prioritizes reading aloud but also has several children and household duties, this was an easy way to clock more hours reading while I got the dishes and laundry done.

Why We Chose Yoto for Our Homeschool

A couple of years later, we gifted Yoto players to our next two children. They loved them, too. Since then, all of our children have spent countless quiet hours listening to classic literature thanks to Yoto.

In our home, Yoto has become a cornerstone of our quiet time routine, our road trip strategy, and our daily rhythm of independent learning.

Yoto cards or gift cards are on every birthday, Christmas, and gift-giving list (which makes it feasible).

Why Yoto Works for Homeschool Families

We love Yoto because:

  • It’s screen-free

  • It gives us more read-aloud time without straining my voice

  • It supports independent learning

  • It keeps kids entertained on long trips

  • It builds a rich literary and imaginative culture at home

Our Favorite Yoto Accessories

Each of our children has their own Yoto player with a silicone jacket to keep things protected and color-coded. It helps avoid mix-ups and keeps the players safe from daily wear and tear.

These headphones are perfect for travel (they’re volume-limited and kid-friendly!).

We love making our own Yoto cards (more on that below), so we regularly grab these blank cards.

We store all of our cards in this binder, making it easy to keep everything organized and accessible.

Our Yoto Book Collection (and How We Curate It)

We allow our children to choose their own Yoto cards, as long as they’re pre-approved by us. We focus on classic literature and timeless tales. Some of our favorite collections include:

Want to make your own Yoto cards?

We’ve done that, too! Here’s a step-by-step guide to creating custom Yoto content with blank cards.

Yoto as a Homeschool Hack

Honestly, I can’t overstate how much we’ve loved our Yoto players. They’ve become one of my favorite homeschool mom “hacks” — especially when I need to:

  • Make lunch in peace

  • Tend to the toddler

  • Have quiet time that actually stays quiet

  • Offer something enriching on a sick day or travel day

  • Extend the day’s lessons in a way that feels like play

Yoto helps us cultivate a culture of lifelong listening to and learning from great stories.

A Screen-Free Summer Solution

If you're traveling this summer or simply looking for a way to keep your kids engaged without adding screen time, I highly recommend gifting your children a Yoto player. It’s an investment that pays off with every minute of imaginative, educational listening.

Do your kids have a Yoto player? What are some of their favorite stories?
