With Valentine's Day just around the corner and all the sweet or glittery, festive elements that come with it, it's easy for our children (and for us!) to get lost about the true meaning of the word L-O-V-E.
These days provide us with a good opportunity to talk with our children about the significance of affection and caring for others all-year-round beyond the hearts and the chocolates.
Explaining Love to Kids
In The Four Loves, C.S. Lewis wisdom lights our way on the broad subject of Love. (If you have not read this one yet, it's worth going to your reading wish list!).
As for today, Iet's talk about the four types of Love in a way that is easy to understand by our children:
- Affection / Storge (pronounced "STOR-jay"): This is the type of love that is all around us. It's familiar. It's the majority of love that we experience in the normal day-to-day life. A question to ask your kids: Can you think of some examples of things you storge? (Examples: inside jokes, your favorite t-shirt, a certain smell).
- Friendship / Philia (pronounced "FILL-ee-uh"): Philia love is what you experience with your friends when you share a common interest and like being together. You can ask your littles: Who are your friends that you philia? What do you like to do together?
- Romantic / Eros (pronounced "AIR-oss"): This is the love between a husband and wife. It may begin with strong feelings, but it grows into a promise to serve one another forever. Through this love we learn to love like God loves. About this type of love here's a question for your kids: What are some ways you see Mom and Dad loving and caring for each other?
- Charity / Agape (pronounced "uh-GOP-ay"): Agape is the unconditional love God gives us through Jesus. This is our ultimate goal in life: to love like God loves! A question for reflection time with your kids: What does it mean to love unconditionally?
